On September 6th, Jill Abramson will move into the Executive Editor position at The New York Times, becoming the first woman to ever hold the title in the paper’s 160-year existence. Ms. Abramson’s promotion marks a great victory in the on-going battle for advancing women’s leadership in the media. This is welcome news considering that male experts outnumber female experts 9-to-1 in news media reporting and women represent only 29% of newspaper executives. Recent studies by the American Society of News Editors show that women working full-time in daily newspapers only represent 36.92% of full-time staff. Ms. Abramson’s achievement is exciting for its potential to spur the advancement and visibility of women in other news outlets. So, our hat’s off to The New York Times and congratulations to Jill Abramson on her groundbreaking assignment!
