The Center for Women's Global Leadership's "Call to UN Women" and "Ten Recommendations"

The Center for Women's Global Leadership (CWGL) as part of its efforts to bring economic, social and cultural rights to the forefront of policy making within the United Nations is pleased to share a joint "Call for UN Women to Design its Policy and Program on Women's Economic Empowerment from an Economic, Social and Cultural Rights Framework" and "Ten Recommendations UN Women should consider in designing its Policy and Program on Women's Economic Empowerment from an Economic, Social and Cultural Rights Framework."

The "Call to UN Women" sets the broader stage for UN Women's implementation of the economic, social and cultural rights framework while the "Ten Recommendations" are a more succinct set of essential suggestions for UN Women to take into account while implementing those rights in their program and policy design.

UN Women is carrying out both formal and informal consultations around the world as it prepares to adopt its first strategic plan and inaugurate the first Board of Directors and Senior Leadership. At this time it is crucial that efforts to ensure fulfillment of economic, social and cultural rights are at the forefront of policy making. For that reason, the Call to Action and Ten Recommendations call upon UN Women to stand for women's equality and human rights by building overall internal capacity on human rights, particularly building expertise on economic, social and cultural rights, and the relationship between the realization of these rights, substantive equality, non-discrimination and economic and social policies.

We hope this joint call will be of use to those advocating for these rights around the world. Please feel free to use these materials in your activism and advocacy work.

The call to action and ten recommendations to UN Women are the result of a joint effort and endorsed by CWGL, AWID, The Feminist Alliance for International Action, Action Aid, ESCR Net---Women and ESCR Group, Women in Development Europe (WIDE), GCAP-Feminist Task Force, and the Urban Justice Center.
