RE:GENDER INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

For over three decades, Re:Gender (formerly National Council for Research on Women) has helped advance rights and opportunities for women and girls, nationally and globally. We provide the information and research needed to foster more equitable futures for women and girls. The key to the Council’s past and future success is highly-focused, accessible, timely research linked with action and real-life solutions. Through Research-Action groups organized around urgent issue areas, rapid-response communications campaigns, and a website that features the expertise and information produced by our network, the Council delivers the facts, promotes informed activism, and encourages positive change.

Re:Gender’s Intern Program exposes interns to the inner workings of a nonprofit while providing valuable job training, mentoring, and networking opportunities.  The program introduces interns to the daily and long-term issues nonprofits currently face.  At the same time, interns are immersed in a wide range of women’s issues and are introduced to an extensive network of researchers, advocates, and activists, expanding an education that often begins with college courses in Women’s Studies.

Interns participate in various Re:Gender projects and activities involving our network members that will expand their awareness of jobs available within the feminist community and may encourage their return to Re:Gender or its network members as future employees.  In addition, interns have opportunities to forge connections with other interns and staff at NYC-Area network members, thus initiating a professional network that will continue to serve them long after the internship ends.

Fall and Spring interns must commit to at least 14 hours per week. Those who can commit to more hours are welcome to do so, however, and may be given preference. During the Summer, a 35 hours per week commitment is strongly encouraged; applicants with more available schedules will be given priority. We try to be flexible with people’s schedules as much as we are able. When appropriate, the Council will assist interns in arranging for academic or work-study credit. A daily stipend of $10 (for food and travel) is available.

The ideal applicants will be a Junior, Senior, graduate or post-graduate who has:

  • Sound judgment, excellent interpersonal and communications skills, a strong work ethic and superb attention to detail;
  • Responsibility, flexibility, patience, proactivity and efficiency in a fast-paced work setting;
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills;
  • Flexibility and ability to work collaboratively and productively in a dynamic, change-driven office environment;
  • A can-do attitude and equal parts humor, compassion and sensibility necessary to address the practicalities and
  • desires of an entrepreneurial non-profit;
  • A commitment to Re:Gender's values, mission, goals, and program; an appreciation of the value of research,
  • particularly feminist research, to influence public agendas and policy.

***Please note: A graduate or post-graduate degree is required for the Programs internship.

Internship Department: Communications

Communications Interns will work under the direction of the Associate Director of Communications and assist with research on breaking news stories that are of particular interest to the Re:Gender’s mission.  Proficient research and writing skills and attention to detail are critical; experience with website content and HTML are helpful.

The intern’s responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

  • Provide support for the newly launched website, including the database of resources and expertise
  • Produce news round-ups and other monitoring and analysis of current coverage and trends
  • Monitor a wide variety of news sources and websites for stories directly related to the lives and conditions of women around the world
  • Update Re:Gender media lists
  • Assist with website and blog updates
  • Conduct outreach to and communicate with Re:Gender’s network
  • Administrative support as needed
 

Internship: Fundraising & Development

The Development Intern reports to the Director of Development to support the fundraising efforts of the Council.

The intern’s responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

  • Support the upkeep of the donor database (DonorPefect)
  • Complete prospect research using a variety of internet and print resources
  • Provide assistance with all fundraising activities including Awards Dinner, individual donors, grant proposals, etc.
  • Compile collateral material for meetings
  • Work on special projects as needed
 

Internship Department: Programs

Working under the direct supervision of the Vice President for Programs, the Research Intern would support the research and policy programs Re:Gender. S/he would help manage correspondence to network members and other constituencies; contribute to the development of policy briefs and position papers; and conduct relevant research on topics of interest to the Council; additionally, s/he will keep abreast of relevant issues and coordinate the collection and filing of news articles, reports and other materials.

The intern’s responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

  • Conduct regular, relevant research on topics which affect the lives of women and girls
  • Contribute to the development of online primers, literature reviews, monthly and/or annual statistics gathering and other content as needed
  • Respond to research inquiries from our constituency and the general public
  • Correspond with the Re:Gender's network and other constituencies if necessary
  • Support the programmatic and research components of the website, including responding to timely news stories
  • Support special projects and events(e.g. Annual Conference, Awards Dinner and Afternoon Program)
  • Provide administrative support as needed
  • ***Please note: A graduate or post-graduate degree is required for the Programs internship.
 

Internship Department: Operations – Administration & Finance

Working under the direct supervision of the Director of Operations, the Operations Intern would support the day-to-day operations of Re:Gender.

The intern’s responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

  • Support projects related to the organization’s finances, including budget program preparation
  • Assist with HR administration, including intern recruitment
  • Assist with event preparations and logistics (board meetings, fundraising and programmatic events)
  • Perform research on vendors and prepare cost benefit analysis
  • Prepare materials and packets for staff and guests
  • Provide general administrative support
  • Special projects as needed
