Recruiting and retaining a work force that is diverse in gender, race and other markers of difference provides businesses and organizations with innovative ideas and a competitive edge. Diversity provides a significant advantage in competing for clients, customers and suppliers in today’s global marketplace. NCRW is supporting diversity efforts by recommending best practices for recruiting, retaining and advancing the careers of women, particularly women of color. This research extends to examining the benefits of diversity in leadership and how women’s participation improves decision-making. NCRW is helping companies to assess their workplace environments and identify barriers to inclusion: from practices, to policies, to the informal culture of organizations. NCRW’s Corporate Circle supports companies in their efforts to strengthen and advance policies that boost diversity and inclusion.

Gender Inequality in Popular Films: Examining On Screen Portrayals and Behind-the-Scenes Employment Patterns in Motion Pictures Released between 2007-2009

A new study by USC Annenberg researchers Stacy Smith, Marc Choueitiand Stephanie Gall surveys the top 100 grossing movies of 2009 and shows Hollywood's addiction to films that marginalize and sexualize women is as strong as ever.

Perhaps most troubling were the findings about young teen characters. Professor Smith and her research team of undergraduate students found the same prevalence of sexually revealing clothing and partial nudity in female characters in all age groups from 13 to 39.

From Gen Y Women to Employers: What They Want in the Workplace and Why it Matters for Business

The report explores Generation Y women’s career choices and the opportunities and challenges they face in the workplace.  This research, based on a national survey conducted in May 2011, disputes many reports in today’s popular literature that Gen Y women do not believe that gender is a problem in today’s workplace.  In fact, 77% of respondents said that gender is a moderate or severe problem in today’s workplace and almost 50% said that they had observed or experienced gender discrimination.   

Key findings included concerns about gender and age discrimination, the desire for a holistic approach to work‐life balance and the fact that Gen Y women do not hold a uniform set of work values.

Women in the Boardroom: A Global Perspective

Women in the Boardroom: A Global Perspective, examines the legislative efforts being pursued across 17(i) countries to encourage more women to serve on listed company boards.

The updated edition of the report, by the Deloitte Global Center for Corporate Governance, comes after numerous governmental developments have evolved in several countries since the January 2011 publishing of the first edition. The new research highlights a variety of approaches to support diversity on boards, including requiring more disclosure, setting targets, and implementing quotas. According to the study, strong variations exist among countries regarding the most efficient way to achieve higher levels of diversity.
