Women [and men] today are seeking greater flexibility in their jobs to balance more effectively their work and family responsibilities. Lack of such arrangements often forces women to opt out of pursuing their career goals. When they return to work, women find themselves at a disadvantage in terms of earnings, opportunities and promotions. Employers who adopt more flexibility in the workplace allow women and men to lead more productive and effective lives.

Tipped Over the Edge - Gender Inequity in the Restaurant Industry

 The report shows that women who work in the industry face systematic discrimination, poverty wages, a lack of sick days, and five times more harassment than the general female workforce. One major cause of poverty for these working women is that restaurant lobbyists have succeeded in keeping the federal minimum wage for servers and other tipped workers frozen at only $2.13 per hour for the past 20 years.

 Liberty and justice for all is not yet a reality in America. Despite the election of our nation’s first African American president, black Americans continue to trail behind their white counterparts in education, employment, and overall health and wellbeing. And while some states and the federal government continue to expand protections for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people, more than half of all states still deny them basic civil rights. Such systemic inequities render people of color who are also gay and transgender among the most vulnerable in our society.

Girls in ICT Portal

 The United Nations launched a new web portal focusing on helping girls and women access job opportunities, training and career advice in the information and communication technology (ICT) sector.

The website – girlsinict.org – is designed to inspire and help young women between the ages of 11 and 25 prepare for and pursue careers in technology by providing them with useful resources such as links to scholarships, internships, ICT contests and awards, tech camps and online networks where they can interact with other women working in an industry that is largely male-dominated.

Women: Let’s Talk About Retirement The 12 th Annual Transamerica Retirement Survey

 Women of all ages share dreams of retirement that include traveling, spending time with family and friends, and pursuing hobbies, but only 8 percent strongly agree that they are building a large enough retirement nest egg, according to research released by the non-profit Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies® (“The Center”). As part of its 12th Annual Transamerica Retirement Survey, the Center surveyed over 1,800 American women workers to understand where their outlook stands today and what approaches could help them make their retirement futures brighter.
