Taxes & Tax Reform

The US tax structure has increasingly favored wealthy individuals and corporations, shifting the tax burden to middle and lower income individuals—disproportionately women. With funding cuts that further undermine women’s economic security, the importance of tax and budgetary reforms is critical for women’s economic well-being and advancement. The impact of fiscal policies on women and families needs wider public understanding accompanied by appropriate and effective policy responses.

To overcome economic hardship, women need opportunities to learn new skills and earn fair wages in order to support themselves and their families and lead healthy and productive lives. Women’s advancement and well-being also depend on access to basic services and safety nets, such as paid sick leave, affordable child care and elder care, portable health care, adequate housing and secure retirements, including social security.

Reducing gender inequality could play a key role in addressing the twin problems of
population ageing and pension sustainability. In countries where it is relatively easy
for women to work and have children, female employment and fertility both tend to be
higher.

Poverty

Women and Poverty: The poverty rate for adult women has been substantially higher than for adult men in every year since official poverty measurement began. Legal Momentum is proposing policy solutions that will alleviate women and children’s poverty.

Violence

Women face violence at home, on the street, and in the workplace. Notwithstanding one of Legal Momentum’s signature achievements – passage of the Violence Against Women Act—supportive services, rights and protective measures for victims remain inadequate.

Workplace Rights

Nearly 50 years after sex discrimination in employment was prohibited, women continue to be paid less, face sexual harassment, and confront barriers to hiring and promotion. These challenges are severe for women in “non-traditional” jobs. Legal Momentum works to protect the workplace rights of women, especially vulnerable populations.

Courts, the Justice System, and Women

Legal Momentum has expertise and resources across a wide range of areas related to discrimination, gender equity, and gender bias. Ranging from sexual and reproductive rights and teen dating violence to gender bias in the courts, Legal Momentum continues to champion the rights of women and girls and to work to eradicate harmful stereotypes and policies shaped by bias while promoting policies and practices that reflect the realities of women’s lives, and advancing their rights under the law. 

Education and Training Equity

Women continue to hold jobs with lower salaries and fewer benefits. They face barriers to employment in job sectors from which they have long been excluded. Job training programs for both adults and students too often reinforce these trends, failing to provide women and girls with competitive skills and a path into non-traditional, well-compensated jobs.

Opportunities, Grants & Fellowships

 Internship Program

Legal interns assist in developing litigation with legal research, prospective client interviews, drafting pleadings, and other aspects of litigation, and develop public education and policy advocacy materials on a range of women's rights legal issues. Positions are available in our New York City and Washington, D.C. offices.
Legal Momentum accepts applications from undergraduate (non-legal) students, in New York City and Washington D.C., for internship positions in public policy and advocacy, communications and marketing, accounting, development, and other non-profit management areas. Positions are generally unpaid and students are expected to have funding from their schools, or to be enrolled in a course which awards academic credit for the internship experience. Internship applications are accepted throughout the year for at least one-semester of service.

The book demonstrates how women benefit from services paid for by taxes – but also how they are adversely affected by the ways in which taxes are currently collected. The information presented is intended to educate, inform, and inspire women to speak out about current tax policy and its impact on their well being and that of their families. The facts point to the strong link between fair taxes and the quality of all our lives.

ECONOMIC STIMULUS FORUM: The Bitter with the Sweet

February 25, 2009 posted by admin Overall, the economic stimulus plan that Congress passed and President Obama signed is a strong package.  We fervently hope it will provide the help that struggling families urgently need, and begin putting the nation on the road to lasting economy recovery.  We’ve never needed that more. There were victories, large and small, for those of us working for equal opportunity, 21st Century benefits, and quality, affordable health care.  The relief for working families and the expansion of unemployment benefits are significant, as is the lower threshold for the child tax credit and increased funding for child care. Not as well known, but extremely important, is the health information technology (HIT) provisions that we fought to maintain.  They withstood an attack from pharmaceutical manufacturers, health plans and drug store chains intent on putting profits ahead of privacy.  With protections against inappropriate disclosures of health information, electronic medical records can do a tremendous amount to reduce medical errors, coordinate and streamline care, and reduce costs.  This was a real step forward.
