Educational Leadership of Women & People of Color

The majority of deans, tenured professors and college presidents are men. According to the American Council on Education, women comprise about 45% of senior academic administrators, including 7% women of color. Of CAOs, 38% are women, but only 3% are women of color. Academic leaders must establish clear objectives for advancing diversity among senior faculty and administrators. They also need to ensure that they create on-campus environments that are both inviting and supportive of diverse staff and students.

Donna Stewartson, is the Associate Director of the Program for Women in Politics and Public Policy. She received her MBA from Simmons Graduate School of Management and a BA in Political Science from Boston College. She has worked as the Special Project Manager at Dimock Community Health Center, Testing Coordinator and Mortgage Scam Consultant at Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights and Program Technician at New Boston Pilot Middle School. Additionally, as a community activist in Boston, she is an Executive Board Member of the Columbia Washington Street Neighborhood Association, an active member of the Four Corners Action Coalition and a member of the Blue Hill Avenue Early Education Center's Parent Council. Carol Hardy-Fanta is Director of the Center for Women in Politics and Public Policy at UMass Boston's John W. McCormack Graduate School of Policy Studies. She received her Ph.D. in Public Policy from Brandeis University's Heller School, an MSW from Smith College, and a B.A. from Occidental College. Dr. Hardy-Fanta is author of three books: Latina Politics, Latino Politics: Gender, Culture, and Political Participation in Boston (Temple University Press, 1993), Latino Politics in Massachusetts: Struggles, Strategies and Prospects (Routledge Press, 2002), and Intersectionality and Politics: Recent Research on Gender, Race, and Political Representation in the United States (Haworth Press, 2006) . She is a nationally recognized scholar on Latina/o politics and has published widely on the intersection of gender, race and ethnicity in politics and public policy.

Dr. Lisa McClain is an Associate Professor of History and the Director of Gender Studies at Boise State University. She researches the issue of domestic violence and sexual assault perpetrated against women with disabilities. She serves as a board member of the Idaho Equal Access Collaborative, a partnership of the Boise State University Gender Studies Program with statewide disability and domestic violence/sexual assault organizations. Through this work, McClain examines and proposes changes to the systems responding to women with disabilities who experience sexual and domestic violence. In history, her fields of specialty include the history of Catholicism, the history of religion during the Renaissance/Reformation era and gender and popular culture in early modern Europe.

A Measure of Equity: Women's Progress in Higher Education

The Association of American Colleges and Universities has released a report that compiles the latest data on women and gender equity in higher education. The report, "A Measure of Equity: Women's Progress in Higher Education," made its debut in Seattle during the association's annual meeting, which ended on January 24, 2009. The report updates a 1995 "data-driven" overview of women in higher education published by the American Council of Education, the association said in a written statement. It concludes that women have made strides in higher education, but the progress isn't across the board. Among the topics explored in "A Measure of Equity" are inequities for women in specific fields, how the careers of female faculty members are affected by families, and the growing pool of women in contingent faculty positions with no chance of being promoted.

Beverly Guy Sheftall, Ph.D., is the founding director of the Women's Research and Resource Center and the Anna Julia Cooper Professor of Women's Studies at Spelman College.  She is also adjunct professor at Emory University's Institute for Women's Studies where she teaches graduate courses. At the age of sixteen, she entered Spelman College where she majored in English and minored in secondary education.  After graduation with honors, she attended Wellesley College for a fifth year of study in English.  In 1968, she entered Atlanta to pursue a master's degree in English; her thesis was entitled, "Faulkner's Treatment of Women in His Major Novels."  A year later she began her first teaching job in the Department of English at Alabama State University in Montgomery, Alabama.
