Going beyond Women’s Ambition: Diversifying Corporate Leadership from All Angles

In his recent  LinkedIn post, PricewaterhouseCooper’s (PwC) Bob Moritz, Chairman and Senior Partner, shares steps CEOs can take to tackle the challenge of diversifying corporate leadership and closing the gap.  Bob, one of our 2013 “Making a Difference for Women” Award recipients, highlights accountability, inclusivity, and awareness, all of which seem to be common sense. However, it is in implementation of these principles, or lack thereof, where some companies miss the mark and PwC leads.  Bob acknowledges that the solution goes beyond women’s ambition, requiring work by institutions and individuals, BOTH men and women.  We all need to work together, not just to discuss what needs to be done, but to take action.

Built by Women

Built By Women is a tribute to the history of women and the buildings and sites they have created.

Women of 20th – Century American Architecture Collection

Will preserve–with the support of a matching grant from the National Endowment for the Arts–the legacies of the pioneering women who shaped the built environment, housed in the online database, Dynamic National Archive (DNA), with over 1200 names covering all 50 states.

Educating the Public
Museum Programs–creating public conversations–previously at The Museum of Modern Art and the Guggenheim Museum in New York, recently at the Detroit Institute of Art and annually with the National Building Museum, Washington, D.C.
Films & Tours
Creating educational resources and onsite experiences about women and the ways they have contributed to shaping our built environment. Films include “A Girl Is A Fellow Here”: 100 Women Architects in the Studio of Frank Lloyd Wright (2009); and BWAF support for “Radiant Sun: Designer Ruth Adler Schnee,” and “EAMES: The Architect and The Painter,” 2012 Peabody Award winner.
A program comprised of principals or partners of some of the world’s largest architecture, engineering and construction firms selected by the Foundation to develop strategies to improve advancement of women leaders in the building industry.

Desiring Change

Desire and gender are brought alive through the ways lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, and intersexed people use their bodies; desire and gender are made poignant and meaningful by the ways we construct or deny our erotic passions and gendered identities in the course of daily life. People will take risks—facing marginalization, isolation, and even violence—to identify and act upon their desires. And they will live out their unique understanding of gender—no matter how dangerous or costly the results. This report represents the integration of joint efforts by the Barnard Center for Research on Women (BCRW) and Queers for Economic Justice (QEJ), beginning with activist and academic convenings that took place from 2005-07 under the name “Desiring Change,” and culminating in a daylong gathering in 2007 with 21 social justice organizations.
