Sexuality & Gender

Sexuality and gender are a major focus of NCRW member center research, policy and advocacy efforts. Increasing support for LGBT rights, both nationally and internationally, is an outgrowth of such research and public awareness campaigns. Our network recognizes the complexity of human sexuality and how gender roles can be stereotyped and narrowly defined by society. There are important sexuality and gender dimensions to policymaking and legal rights, including those related to marriage, the custodial rights of unmarried single parents and same-sex couples, and anti-discrimination employment and housing laws. Our member centers are examining gender identity and the ever-evolving perceptions of masculinity and femininity in popular culture and politics.

Center for the Study of Women

The UCLA Center for the Study of Women is an internationally recognized center for research on gender, sexuality, and women's issues and the first organized research unit of its kind in the University of California system. Though CSW is funded by the Division of Social Sciences, it serves the entire university. CSW is part of the Division’s commitment to gender equity and research parity at UCLA. Its mission is to develop and foster research, to facilitate productive scholarly relationships, and to aid recruitment and retention efforts. Established in 1984, it draws on the expertise of more than two hundred members from thirty-four departments and ten UCLA professional schools. CSW administers research grants for faculty and students; organizes research projects, conferences, seminars, and public lectures; and publishes a monthly web newsletter that features research, conference reports, faculty profiles, and announcements.

Support for Undergraduate Students

As part of its commitment to academic excellence, CSW encourages the development of scholarly and professional skills among UCLA undergraduate students interested in research related to women, gender and sexuality.  Through our awards, newsletter, meeting space, and employment, CSW fosters the success of many undergraduates.  While student support has always been a part of CSW’s mission, this structure has been extended and formalized through the organization of new opportunities for undergraduate students.

Support for Graduate Students

n its twenty-six years as an organized research unit at UCLA, CSW has advanced academic excellence in the study of gender, sexuality, and women’s issues by developing and fostering both faculty and student research and by facilitating productive scholarly relationships across the campus and around the world. Through funding, programming, and employment opportunities, CSW has long supported and advanced the research and professional careers of graduate students at UCLA. In recent years, CSW has dramatically extended and formalized this support through targeted fundraising, innovations in programming structures, and the creation of new scholarly and professional training opportunities. The Graduate Student Initiative is our renewed and extended public commitment to promoting the professional success and academic excellence of graduate students at UCLA. Research Scholars Program

CSW created the Research Scholar program in Spring of 1989 and instituted this affiliation during the 1990-1991 academic year.  The Research Scholar category was created to provide a Center affiliation and title for established scholars not funded on extramural projects. The program supports local independent scholars who are conducting research on women, sexuality, or gender who have limited institutional access to research support. Research Scholars must have an active research project in progress and neither a tenure-track position nor a permanent, full-time academic affiliation with a college or university. CSW encourages affiliation from a diverse group of scholars from across the academic disciplines.

Co-Sponsorship

The UCLA Center for the Study of Women (CSW) partners regularly with other UCLA entities to foster innovative scholarship and intellectual community.  CSW cosponsors events on a selective basis.  The campus-based event must be hosted or initiated by another UCLA unit and have a clear relevance to CSW’s mission of reaching across disciplines to foster a community of scholars studying women, sexuality, and gender.

Visiting Scholars Program

The Consortium for Women and Research is pleased to announce the continuation of its Visiting Scholars Program. Each year we provide a small group of competitively selected domestic and international scholars with university affiliation, library privileges, shared office space (when possible), computer/internet access, and the opportunity to participate in the Consortium’s events.

Graduate Student Travel Awards
Provides funds to graduate students in any field for travel to professional conferences, workshops, or professional events for the purpose of presenting their own research or creative work and for engaging in networking plan of their own construction. Historically, the Consortium has given preference to students in the areas of research for which funding is not easily available. It has also funded students in areas in which women are distinctly under represented.
Travel Awards are to be used for travel from December 15, 2012 through June 30, 2013. Awards limited to $500 domestic and $800 international travel.

First-Year Post-Doctoral Travel Award
These awards provide funding to women in their first year of post-doctoral study in any of the STEM disciplines for travel to professional meetings for the purpose of presenting their
PhD research and implementing a networking plan of their own construction. The consortium gives priority to proposals from scholars whose research focuses on gender and/or who are in STEM fields in which women are distinctly underrepresented. 

Outstanding Mentor Awards
Honor Academic Senate and Academic Federation members for mentoring women post-docs and graduate students in research and professional development. They include $500 towards research support.

Graduate Research Awards (GRA)
Funds graduate student research and creative work up to $1,000 in three areas:
- Research about women and gender in its multiple intersections with race, class, sexual and national identity.
- Research that focuses on or leads to the improvement of the lives of girls or women.
- Research in the natural and physical sciences or engineering that advances the Consortium's goals.

Research Interest Group Awards
Research Interest Groups are groups of faculty, graduate students, and postdocs who are engaged in collaborative, interdisciplinary research projects by and about women and/or gender in its intersections with race, class, sexual and national identity, and the like. Provides funds to sponsor Research Interest Groups in order to facilitate collaborative, cross-disciplinary research and inquiry by and about women and about gender in its multiple intersections with race, class, sexual and national identity, create opportunities for cross-disciplinary discussion among scholars, create support groups that assist RIG members in preparing and submitting grant proposals, and build better connections between scholars, policy makers,activists and/or local communities.

Beatrice Bain Research Group

The Beatrice Bain Research Group (BBRG) is the University of California at Berkeley's research center on gender and women, established in 1986. The BBRG is particularly interested in enabling research on gender in its intersections with sexuality, race, class, nation, religion, postcoloniality and transnational feminisms. To meet the needs of its various constituencies, the BBRG engages in a range of activities. These include: the Scholars In Residence Program; the Affiliated Scholars Program; Scholars in Residence Panels; Invited Lectures Series; and co-sponsorship with other research units, departments and organizations on campus of conferences, lectures and other events with feminist content.

Opportunities, Grants & Fellowships

 
Scholars in the field of feminist research from throughout the world tender applications for Visiting Scholar status at BBRG. These honorary affiliates are chosen on the strength of their research projects and the ability of the faculty or library resources on the Berkeley campus to meet their research needs. Scholars generally remain at BBRG for six months to one year, and are expected to complete the project they originally proposed. They are also to participate regularly in BBRG's scholarly life and academic programs. These scholars are granted access to the university library system, photocopy and mailing privileges, and shared office space.

Scholars in Residence Program

Among its programs and activities, the BBRG has a Scholars-in-Residence Program. Under the auspices of this Program, each year the BBRG hosts a new group of approximately ten competitively selected scholars from the U.S. and abroad for a period of one academic year.

Affiliated Scholars Program

Among the BBRG programs and activities is the BBRG Affiliated Scholars Program, designed to accommodate visiting scholars who would like to spend a relatively short period of time in residence, ranging from one month to one semester. (For a period of residency of one full academic year, please see the BBRG Scholars-in-Residence Program). The BBRG Affiliated Scholars Program is open to scholars who meet UC Berkeley's visiting scholar definition, from the U.S. and abroad, whose work is centrally on women and gender. Applicants must have the Ph.D. in hand one year prior to the beginning of the appointment.

Center for the Study of Women in Society

The University of Oregon's Center for the Study of Women in Society promotes research on the complexity of women’s lives and the intersecting nature of gender identities and inequalities. Faculty and graduate students affiliated with the Center generate and share this research with other scholars and educators, the public, policymakers, and activists. CSWS researchers come from a broad range of fields in arts and humanities, law and policy, social sciences, physical and life sciences, and the professional schools.

Feminist Thought and Scholarship

Research Interest Groups. Research Interest Groups (RIG) organized by CSWS foster collaboration between scholars at the university. Faculty, graduate students, and community members participate in programs and events. RIGs are designed to facilitate collaborative research; create support groups for the preparation of grant proposals; build better connections between scholars and community activists; and generate opportunities for cross-disciplinary dialogue among scholars.

Women of Color Project

CSWS was awarded a Ford Foundation grant in March 2008 from the National Council for Research on Women (NCRW). “Diversifying the Leadership of Women’s Research Centers,” was meant to promote the leadership of women of color from historically underrepresented groups in the United States within NCRW and within its women’s research, policy, and advocacy member centers. CSWS and the UO Office of the Vice President for Research provided matching funds.

Charise Cheney, associate professor, UO Department of Ethnic Studies, continues as the 2012-13 coordinator of the CSWS Women of Color Project. Cheney’s research interests include African-American popular and political cultures, black nationalist ideologies and practices, and gender and sexuality. She is the author of Brothers Gonna Work It Out: Sexual Politics in the Golden Age of Rap Nationalism (New York: New York University Press, 2005) and is currently working on a book about black resistance to school desegregation in Topeka, Kansas in the decade before Brown v Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas. She earned her PhD at the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana.

Fembot Project

Designed to re-imagine academic writing and research, the Fembot Project participates in the ongoing revolution in academic publishing, taking seriously the advice of scholars to democratize our publications by embracing open access, open source publications. The Fembot Project centrally includes a new journal—Ada: Journal of Gender, New Media, and Technology—that will be broadly accessible, both in terms of physical access and in terms of its content. The Fembot website comprises three overlapping projects: Ada, Laundry Day, and a professional clearinghouse.

Women Writers Project

This group organized MemoirFest, the first annual CSWS Women Writers Symposium, held May 12, 2012. The second annual CSWS Women Writers Symposium: Common Ground, was held over Mother’s Day weekend 2013. The Women Writers Project seeks to foster and enhance opportunities for women writers on campus, in the community, and throughout the Pacific Northwest; to bring distinct voices of published women writers to campus; and to support the work of creative writing by bringing together writers from different disciplines.

By providing these highly competitive grants and fellowships, CSWS consistently has supported many important research projects at various stages of development and enriched programs in all sectors of the university. The Center has offered research funding to faculty and graduate students at the University of Oregon for more than 25 consecutive years.

Institute for Research on Women

At the forefront of feminist research for over thirty years, the Institute for Research on Women (IRW) advances cutting-edge, interdisciplinary scholarship on gender, sexuality and women. Part of the School of Arts and Sciences at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, the IRW was founded in 1977 by faculty and administrators seeking to expand feminist scholarship and activism beyond the university’s fledgling Women’s Studies program. Today, the IRW supports a broad range of programming designed to stimulate research on gender, sexuality and women within and across the disciplines, throughout and beyond Rutgers. Promoting faculty and student connections and building intellectual community are also central to the IRW’s mission.

The IRW fosters feminist research at Rutgers through creative programming tied to an annual theme. The weekly Faculty/Graduate Seminar brings together faculty and advanced graduate students from a broad range of disciplines and from all three Rutgers campuses. Participants present works-in-progress, addressing the IRW’s annual theme from a range of disciplinary and methodological perspectives. The Distinguished Lecture Series presents innovative research by prominent feminist scholars and activists from Rutgers and other universities, exploring the annual theme in depth. The Undergraduate Learning Community extends the strengths of the IRW’s programs and research community to advanced undergraduate students who attend the IRW’s lecture series, develop research projects related to the annual theme, and work with IRW seminar fellows as mentors. Recent annual themes have included The Culture of Rights/The Rights of Culture (2008-9), Gendered Agency (2009-10) and The Art & Science of Happiness (2010-11).
 
In addition to its thematic programming, the IRW regularly organizes a one-to-three day Spring Colloquium addressing emergent debates in feminist activism and scholarship. Previous topics include the intersections of labor, class and sexuality; immigrant women’s collective organizing and the tensions between gender and disability studies.
 
Other regular programs include a workshop on Negotiating Basics for Women Entering the Academic Job Market, featuring women faculty of different ranks from the sciences, social sciences and humanities, and a Graduate Student Forum on Feminist Scholarship, enabling graduate students to share and receive feedback on their research.

Books

Gender and Culture at the Limits of Rights, edited by Dorothy L. Hodgson (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2011), explores the concept of "women's rights as human rights” and the way in which a rights-based analysis can promote or limit the attainment of gender justice. Most of the essays in the volume were originally presented as part of the 2008-9 IRW seminar and its accompanying spring colloquium.

No Permanent Waves: Recasting Histories of U.S. Feminism, edited by Nancy Hewitt (Rutgers University Press, 2010) showcases a group of papers that were first presented at an IRW colloquium. The contributors "address issues of race, class and sexuality within histories of women's rights and feminism as well as the cultural and intellectual currents and social and political priorities that marked movements for women's advancement and liberation. The concept of waves surging and receding cannot fully capture these multiple and overlapping movements, chronologies, issues, and sites."

The papers collected in The Sex of Class: Women Transforming American Labor, edited by Dorothy Sue Cobble (Cornell University Press, 2007), examines the role sex plays in the workforce, as well as contemporary and historical domestic and global labor movements. 

The Journal of International Labor and Working-Class History issued a special edition on “Working-Class Subjectivities and Sexualities” in Spring 2006. Edited by Dorothy Sue Cobble and Victoria Hattam, several of the articles in this volume were first presented as papers at spring colloquium organized by the IRW and ILWCH in 2004. 

Gendering Disability, edited by Bonnie G. Smith and Beth Hutchison (Rutgers University Press, 2004), collects work presented at a three-day IRW conference that brought together gender studies and disabilities studies scholars.

Feminist Locations: Local and Global, Theory and Practice edited by Marianne DeKoven (Rutgers University Press, 2001), is based on scholarship presented at the IRW from 1995 to 1998.

Transitions, Environments, Translations: Feminisms in International Politics edited by Joan W. Scott, Cora Kaplan, and Debra Keates (Routledge, 1997), from work presented at a conference jointly presented by the Institute for Advanced Studies in Princeton and the IRW.

With the Women's Rights Litigation Clinic at Rutgers Law School-Newark, the IRW co-sponsored The Project on Reproductive Rights Laws for the 1990s which culminated in the 1989 Rutgers University Press volume Reproductive Laws for the 1990s, co-edited by Sherrill Cohen and Nadine Taub.

Describing the impetus for Changing Our Own Words: Essays on Criticism, Theory and Writing By Black Women (Rugters University Press, 1989), Board of Governors Zora Neale Hurston Professor of English Cheryl Wall writes, “I took the idea for a one-day conference to then-IRW director Carol Smith, who embraced it enthusiastically. The conference on October 22-23, 1987, was one of the most gratifying experiences of my career. The room for the symposium was filled with many of the most brilliant scholars and writers of my generation. The book became one of the foundational texts in black feminist criticism. I will forever be grateful for the support of the IRW.”

Women, Households, and the Economy, edited by Lourdes Beneria and Catharine R. Stimpson (Rutgers University Press, 1987), collects papers presented at a two-day conference stemming from a grant from the Russell Sage Foundation “to bring together a group of scholars on the cutting edge of the thinking about women and the economy.”

Visiting Scholars

Visiting Scholars are faculty and independent scholars from outside NYU who are resident at the Center for the Study of Gender and Sexuality for a limited time to conduct research.
 
NYU’s location in the heart of Greenwich Village and its library collections and other research resources offer unique opportunities for research. The faculty at NYU offers a dazzling array of colleagues with whom to collaborate.
 
Visiting scholars typically spend one to two semesters at NYU. At present, we are unable to offer office space to Visiting Scholars. There is, however, limited access to fax, copier, computer and internet. Library access and borrowing privileges are provided.
 
Visiting Scholars are expected to participate in the life of the Center by attending CSGS events, including regularly scheduled lunch talks in which Visiting Scholars may be asked to present current research projects. There are also opportunities for Visiting Scholars to meet as a group to discuss their research.

We start with the knowledge that our fight is not yet over. It's true that women have come a long way since the 1970s, but for every woman who has reached the "top" (and who still face discrimination, by the way), there are millions of women struggling to earn a living wage, gain access to basic health care, secure affordable child care and participate in the opportunities that should be available to every person in the U.S.
 
At the Ms. Foundation, we work to bring attention to the real challenges facing women, especially women of color and low-income women, living in poverty, working paycheck to paycheck or both.

It's ridiculous and alarming that birth control and basic health services are still "controversial." We're leading the fight to protect women's reproductive rights, including abortion, access to contraception and health care, particularly in low-income communities and communities of color.
 
Equal Pay for Women

Forty years ago, a woman would earn only 56% of what a man would earn in an identical job. Today, the pay gap is stuck at 77%. We aren't satisfied, and we won't quit until women earn equal pay for equal work.
 
Affordable Child Care & Quality Child Care Jobs

Did you know that the full-time child care costs for an infant eat up 41% of the average single mother's income? Or that the very people we rely on to take care of our children earn some of the lowest wages in the country? Affordable child care and quality child care jobs are essential to the health and stability of U.S. families. We need policies that support working parents and providers and reflect real family values. 
 
 
Whether it's a colleague, friend or family member, it is likely that you know someone who has been affected by child sexual abuse. Each of us has a role to play in breaking the silence and supporting solutions. Preventing child sexual abuse is within our power, and we are working to provide information, education and resources to keep our children safe. 
 
Immigration Law that's Right for Women
 
The majority of immigrants are women – women who are often concentrated in low-wage jobs without access to health care and other benefits, women who have fewer protections from gender-based violence, and women who disproportionately suffer from failed immigration policies. We're advancing immigrants' rights in support of women.

Grants

We believe that women are the engine for change in their communities. By funding game changing organizations that are successfully addressing pivotal issues of reproductive health; affordable child care with living wage jobs; and ending child sexual abuse – we are having real impact on the lives of women, children, families and paving the road toward a nation of justice for all.
 
As a national grantmaker, we support organizations at all levels, from grassroots to state and national organizations. We believe that women most directly impacted by an issue are the real experts and we select groups that are of the community they work in.
We choose our grantees carefully, informed by decades of work in the field. Our goals is to connect with emerging and established groups poised to act when and where change is needed.

Women's Studies Program

Women,Gender and Sexuality Studies [WGSS] is a transdisciplinary program for students who wish to explore gender and its relation to other axes of power such as, race, class, ethnicity, nationality, religion and sexuality. WGSS covers a complex variety of theoretical and empirical scholarship both within traditional disciplines and in transdisciplinary frames in the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences, as well as combinations of the three. The Program is committed to critical perspectives and bodies of knowledge that contribute to possibilities for transformation and change. Towards this end, WGSS courses emphasize participatory education in which student involvement, critical thinking and personal insight are encouraged and made relevant in the learning process.  Faculty members from a variety of disciplines offer regular courses in WGSS. Each semester the WGSS program publishes a list of courses relevant to the program.

Wellesley Centers for Women

At the Wellesley Centers for Women (WCW), Wellesley College, we believe that disciplined, relevant research and theory paired with innovative training and action programs are key building blocks for social progress.
 
Since 1974, WCW has conducted interdisciplinary studies on issues such as: gender equity in education, sexual harassment in schools, child care, adolescent development, gender violence, and women’s leadership—studies that have influenced private practices and public policy.
 
WCW staff members provide professional development for educators, child caregivers, and youth workers that encourage children’s social-emotional development and enhance learning environments and safety.
 
Other WCW scholars have dedicated themselves to the prevention of psychological problems, the enhancement of psychological well-being, and the search for a more comprehensive understanding of human deve

Child and Adolescent Development

Scholars at the Wellesley Centers for Women have conducted research studies and evaluations on issues related to child and adolescent development, including issues around race, ethnicity, immigrant status, and identity; the effects of early child care; the value of physical activity; preventing depression; examining unique family dynamics; and exploring sexuality and evaluating sex-education programming.

Childcare

Scholars at the Wellesley Centers for Women have studied the ability of public schools to prepare young children for lifelong learning and have shaped local, state, and federal policies. Our groundbreaking research, policy development, and training programs set the standards for out-of-school time, and continue to inform the field in new areas, including physical activity programming.

 
Scholars at the Wellesley Centers for Women (WCW) have conducted research on a range of educational issues, including quality early education; equitable opportunities in STEM fields and literacy; and bullying prevention and sex-education programming. Scholars and trainers from WCW have also developed curricula and facilitated programs that promote equity and diversity and social-emotional learning in educational settings. Our research has raised public consciousness about serious education issues and has informed public policy.
 
 
Scholars at the Wellesley Centers for Women have conducted numerous research studies on issues related to gender violence, including bullying- and sexual harassment-prevention programs in schools, and patterns of and interventions for intimate partner violence, including family violence and teen dating violence.
 
 
Work by scholars at the Wellesley Centers for Women led to Relational-Cultural Theory, an understanding that has dramatically changed counseling and psychotherapy practices. Through training institutes, this work continues to be developed and implemented. Researchers committed to the prevention of depression in at-risk youth have undertaken studies to identify effective intervention programming for adolescents and families. Trainers and educators at the Centers develop curricula and facilitate training to promote social-emotional learning in elementary schools.
 
 
Scholars are the Wellesley Centers for Women have conducted research on economic implications of public policy; undertaken studies and audits; facilitated network building; and produced valuable resources for advocates, policy makers, and legal professionals in the U.S. and abroad. This work covers a broad range of issues related to the social and economic development of women, children, and persons with disabilities.
 
 
Scholars at the Wellesley Centers undertake research initiatives that explore issues affecting work/life balance, including child care, work-leave policies, and gender roles. Research and action programs that address women’s leadership inform business practice and policy in the U.S. and within our global-network-partner communities. The Women’s Review of Books, a special publication of the Centers, puts women’s perspectives and voices at the center of literary contributions.
