Successful Strategies & Programs

NCRW’s 2001 publication, Balancing the Equation: Where Are Women and Girls in Science, Engineering and Technology? features many recommendations that form the basis of successful programs. The National Science Foundation and others have applied many of the same findings to develop successful programs and strategies. One of the most important features of successful STEM programs is building mentoring relationships between accomplished women STEM professionals and young women at different stages of study or career. MIT and the Mathematical Association of America have created such mentoring programs. In primary and secondary schools, hands-on courses encouraging students to design their own websites or create their own tech toys have been incredibly effective in capturing the interest of girls and young women. Girls Incorporated, an NCRW member center, sponsors TeachingSMART, a program that increases awareness of gender issues among elementary and high school teachers. The Center for the Study of Women, Science, and Technology at Georgia Tech (also an NCRW member) offers support services to women scholars and engineers. And the National Science Foundation is making substantial investments through its ADVANCE Program aimed at increasing the number of women in STEM.

Retaining and Engaging Nonprofit Employees

A study in January 2012 Chronicle of Philanthropy found 82% of nonprofit employees would seek new employment if the economy were better.  Where does dissatisfaction come from, and how can nonprofit leaders and employees improve engagement and retention?

Built By Women is a tribute to the history of women and the buildings and sites they have created.

Women of 20th – Century American Architecture Collection

Will preserve–with the support of a matching grant from the National Endowment for the Arts–the legacies of the pioneering women who shaped the built environment, housed in the online database, Dynamic National Archive (DNA), with over 1200 names covering all 50 states.

Educating the Public
Museum Programs–creating public conversations–previously at The Museum of Modern Art and the Guggenheim Museum in New York, recently at the Detroit Institute of Art and annually with the National Building Museum, Washington, D.C.
Films & Tours
Creating educational resources and onsite experiences about women and the ways they have contributed to shaping our built environment. Films include “A Girl Is A Fellow Here”: 100 Women Architects in the Studio of Frank Lloyd Wright (2009); and BWAF support for “Radiant Sun: Designer Ruth Adler Schnee,” and “EAMES: The Architect and The Painter,” 2012 Peabody Award winner.
A program comprised of principals or partners of some of the world’s largest architecture, engineering and construction firms selected by the Foundation to develop strategies to improve advancement of women leaders in the building industry.

Mildred Garcia, President, CSU Fullerton

Mildred García, Ed.D., is the incoming president of California State University, Fullerton, and currently serves in that capacity at CSU Dominguez Hills, where she has been since 2007. She is the first Latina president of the CSU system. During her tenure, García has cut costs, boosted enrollment, increased student graduation rates and expanded fundraising. She facilitated the first endowed professorship, the <i>Wallis Annenberg Endowed Professor for Innovation in STEM Education</i>.</p><p>García is a scholar in the field of higher education, and her research and publications have concentrated on equity in higher education and its impact on policy practice.

Solutions to Recruit Technical Women

  The Anita Borg Institute for Women and Technology released a new report that outlines four key areas where companies should focus their recruitment efforts to increase access to a range of technical talent available in a highly competitive environment. Solutions to Recruit Technical Women is the first in a series of reports offering solutions companies can employ to improve the recruitment, retention, and advancement of technical women.
