Philanthropy and Social Entrepreneurship

In response to today’s changing landscape, the definition of philanthropy is evolving into one of social entrepreneurship both nationally and globally. Women make up a reported 43 percent of the U.S.’s top wealth holders (individuals with assets of $1.5 million or more) and they are increasingly likely to make contributions based on personal preferences rather than those of spouses or other family members. Women of means are increasingly pooling their resources with like-minded women through funding circles, women’s foundations and associations such as the Women’s Funding Network and the Women Moving Millions campaign. Because women live longer than men, they are expected to manage much of the $41 trillion in charitable giving that is projected to take place over the next 50 years. NCRW seeks to increase networking, and to encourage women to discover their giving capacity by contributing to causes that inspire them most.

Learning the Importance of Reciprocity in Networking

On Tuesday, March 13, the Emerging Leaders Network of the National Council for Research on Women and Philanthropy New York hosted The Nuts, Bolts & Art of Networking, a hands on networking workshop facilitated by David Schachter. Held at the offices of Philanthropy New York, and co-sponsored by NYU’s Wagner Women’s Caucus, the event featured a number of exercises in which participants paired up with one another, in an effort to engage in what Schachter calls the reciprocity of networking.

Catalyzing Growth in the Women-Run Small and Medium Enterprises Sector (SMEs) Evaluating the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Women Initiative

 ICRW conducted an evaluation of the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Women initiative in India to identify early results of the program on women entrepreneurs’ business skills, practices and growth. 10,000 Women, launched in 2008, aims to provide 10,000 women who run small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with high-quality business and management skills training. Research shows that these women are often underserved, in terms of access to business or management training and entrepreneurial networks, despite the enormous potential they have to help grow economies in developing countries.

This brief presents a summary of ICRW’s initial evaluation of the India program, which shows how the 10,000 Women program — in combination with a number of other factors — is making a difference in graduates’ businesses and lives.

Connectivity: How Mobile Phones, Computers and the Internet Can Catalyze Women's Entrepreneurship India: A Case Study

 This study examines how access to and use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) are transforming the economic opportunities available to poor and low-income women in India by promoting their entrepreneurial activity. What types of initiatives support small and medium enterprises for women, and through which ICTs? What factors shape a positive connection between ICTs and women’s business success? What barriers have been lifted and what opportunities realized? What types of impact are ICT-based initiatives having on women, their businesses and beyond? What promising pathways are being shaped, and what channels have yet to be explored?

2011 Study of High Net Worth Women’s Philanthropy

The 2011 Study of High Net Worth Women’s Philanthropy is the latest in a series of industry-leading reports that began in 2006. The latest report is based on nationwide surveys of wealthy donors completed in 2010 and 2011, and was again conducted in partnership with The Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University.
